THE TRANSFORMATION OF LAREDO

When Laredo’s Air Force base closed in the 1970s, many believed it would be the end of our community. Instead, we reinvented ourselves as a center for import and export, and Laredo College played a critical role in that transformation.

As the nation’s busiest inland port of entry for goods, our economy is booming in logistics, warehousing, and transport. Laredo College ensures our workforce is prepared. We train truck drivers, warehouse managers, and more. When new programs are needed, we respond quickly.

Laredo College is more than just a place for education—it’s a cornerstone of the community. Laredo College has changed thousands of lives and opened new career opportunities by helping people learn new skills. I’m one of them. I wouldn’t be sitting here if I hadn’t attended Laredo College. It’s been a lifeline for so many. I believe Laredo wouldn’t be the same without it. We inspire, empower, and transform lives.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL

I’ll never forget my first day on campus. I was so scared.  From the very first day I was met with support from everyone. At Laredo College, I found a community that believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself. My professors, advisors, and classmates all supported me. It didn’t matter that I had quit high school or that I was juggling motherhood and education. They saw my potential.

At first, I enrolled in the paralegal certification program because I didn’t think I was cut out for a degree. But my instructors noticed how passionate I am about the law and the Constitution. They convinced me to go further. After I finished the certificate, I enrolled in a degree program. I now have a clear goal: to become a lawyer.

Today, I’m a summa cum laude graduate of Laredo College with a degree in political science. I’m headed to Texas A&M University on a full scholarship.

FAST TRACK TO A NEW CAREER

Laredo College changed my life. In just three months, I was able to earn a certification in medical technology that launched me into my dream career. The accelerated program at Laredo College turned everything around for me.

Laredo College offered me a fast-track to a better life. Now, I’m able to support my kids, serve my community, and live a life I’m proud of—all thanks to the opportunities that came from that one decision to enroll.

In many ways, everything has come full circle. I’m giving back to my community –the very place that gave me the tools and opportunity I needed to succeed.  As an older student, I’m showing my kids every day that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR LAREDO

For Laredo to keep growing and thriving, we need more companies to set up shop here—and that starts with having an educated, skilled workforce. Laredo College gives local students the tools to succeed, attracting businesses looking for qualified workers. It’s a cascade effect: the more education we provide, the more companies are attracted to Laredo, which brings more jobs, better opportunities, and a higher quality of life for everyone.

As mayor, I’m confident that Laredo College will continue to play a crucial role in our city’s future. Whether it’s through expanding technical programs, creating partnerships with industries, or providing more training for high-demand jobs, the college will remain a cornerstone of our success moving forward.

Laredo College’s role in our community goes beyond just training individuals for jobs. It’s part of a broader strategy to elevate Laredo from its small-town mentality to a city that can meet the challenges of being a significant player in U.S. commerce.
